4 Tips to get you started in arm knitting

Posted by Like Cloud Designs on 22nd Sep 2018

Crafters are increasingly discovering the joy that comes with arm knitting. Arm knitting is way easier than the traditional knitting, and there are no needles involved. It is an excellent motor exercise since most pieces are larger in size. Regardless, be patient with yourself if you don’t grasp the skill as fast as you expected to. Here are tips to help you get started in arm knitting.

1. You can take a break

You can stop in the middle of arm knitting and take a breather. Place the stitches on a holder, which should be something rigid. A paper towel tube or a gift-wrapping roll can serve this purpose. You can thereafter put the stitches back to your arm once you are ready to continue knitting.

2. Choosing yarn

Your choice of yarn is critical in knitting. A cowl for your neck doesn’t have to be bulky. For blankets, the bulkier, the better. Bulky yarn is recommended since the stitches may be stretched in both directions and fullness would be ideal. You can bulk up by knitting with multiple strands of chunky yarn.

3. Uniformity

Twists can make your stitches lack smoothness and uniformity. Turn your loops clockwise as you move from your right to the left arm. Similarly, turn them anti-clockwise while running from the left to the right arm.

4. Tight stitches

You can achieve tight stitches by keeping them close to your arm and keep your hands close together. If your hands are farther apart, they can easily pull the stitches to become bigger. Beginning arm knitters can get frustrated when the last stitch doesn't lock down tight. The trick is to focus on the stitch made just before the last one. You can also manually tighten the stitches from the elbow, towards your wrist.
